International Publications from Turkish Emergency Medicine Departments. Analysis of First Ten Years.

tudy Objectives: Emergency medicine has been recognized as a specialty in Turkey in 1994 and several emergency medicine residency programs has been established in last 10 years. Internationals publications are predictors of academic maturation and productivity. The aim of study was analysis of a ten-year publication output of the Turkish emergency medicine departments.
Methods: Data on the published papers by the authors affiliated to the Emergency Department of University in Turkey in the January 1994 to December 2003 period were searched in MEDLINE databases. The articles were evaluated for the following criteria: types of research, publication journal and year, and whether indexing in Science Citation Index.
Results: A total of 84 papers were retrieved from the search. Seventy-six percent of articles published in last three years. The most common type of article was research articles (n=53, %63.1), the second was case reports (n=22, %26.2). Half of the pulications were on trauma and toxicology issues. The first author was emergency physicians in 57.1%(n=48) of publications.
Conclusion: Although academic productivity of Turkish emergency medicine departments was poor in first years of departments, the publications have been significantly increasing in recent years. It is represents the academic maturation of Turkish emergency medicine departments. It is expected that more publications output in next years.
