Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Management of the trauma patients with objective criteria is essential to determine the way of making diagnosis and treatment policy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between the blood levels of acute phase reactants. ceruloplasmin, haptoglobulin, transferrin, and prognosis.
METHODS: This prospective clinical study was carried out in the Emergency Department of Erciyes University School of Medicine. Patients with injury severity score more than 20 were included in the study. A blood sample was taken for each patient to detect the serum levels of Ceruloplasmin. Haptoglobulin and Transferrin at the time of admission. Volunteer students' blood samples were used as control group.
RESULTS: During the study period. 60 patients were included into the studyand 19 (31 %) were female. 41 (68 %) were male. Fifteen of the patients were operated. 4 of the m died at postoperative period. There was a statistically significant difference in ceruloplasmin levels when compared with the control group in all measurements except for the second hour. Transferin and haptoglobulin levels were also found higher in trauma patients (p < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: As a result. it seems that the changes in the blood levels of all three biochemical parameters are related to the severity of the trauma. Assessment of the magnitude of the changes in these variables may be predictive for both the severity of the trauma and the prognosis of traumatic impact. This represents an opportunity to define betoor strategies for the follow-up and treatment of the trauma victims.
