Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of the study is to determine demographic data of the patients presenting to a tertiary care emergency department (ED) in addition to support national surveillance studies.
Material and Method: In this retrospective study, among the patients presented to the Emergency Department of Ankara University Ibni Sina Hospital between September 2002 and April 2003, 5000 patients were selected randomly.
Results: A total of 5000 patients, 44% (2192) was male, 56% (2808) was female and 41% was older than 50 years old. 61% presented to the ED during the day time (08 am-05 pm), 59% (2963) been had brought by their own cars, only 8% (414) by an ambulance. After the onset of symptoms, 6% of patients presented to the ED in 30 minutes, 73% in 24 hours. 89 % (4431) of patients had a governmental insurance. 25% (1214) of patients’ attending complaint is associated with abdomen, 24% (1212) with trauma and 19% (990) with respiratory and circulatory illnesses.
Conclusion: Most of the patients attended to ED were over 50 years old, women, attended after working hours and within 24 hours afters the symptoms onset, reached by their own cars, had Emekliği Sandığı, had mostly suffered from abdominal pain, trauma, chest pain and wheezing.
