Abstract

OBJECTIVE: It was shown that the laryngeal tube (LT) has a potential role in airway management during intermittent positive-pressure ventilation for anesthesia or CPR by previous reports. The purpose of our study was to assess lung ventilation and gastric inflation when intensive care unit (ICU) or ambulance nurses who are less experienced for endotracheal intubations (ETI) perform ventilation with laryngeal tube in an airway simulator manikin.
METHODS: 50 ICU nurses, ambulance nurses and intern doctors were included in this study and inserted the LT blindly in an airway simulator manikin in two positions. Ease of insertion, number of attempts, and insertion time were recorded.
RESULTS: In normal position; 21 personnel inserted the LT at first attempt 3 personnel inserted it at second attempt in an airway simulator manikin. The success rates were respectively 19 and 5 in simulated cervical rigidity position. One unsuccessful personnel from each group was successful at third attempt after having been showed their mistake.
CONCLUSION: According to our results, we think that the LT may be used by ICU or ambulance nurses who are less experienced for ETI during basic life support while waiting for a professional rescuer who is able to perform tracheal intubation. Until ETI, it provides fast and safe airway. However, we think that further clinical researches are necessary to confirm our results.
